Creating Open Educational Resources with the H5P tool
September 12th, 2022 (half day)
September 12th, 2022 (half day)
Description:
As information technologies have advanced and been more accessible, a vast number of digital resources have become more available for those involved in education. Educators have been using the Internet to spread their materials and courses, and content in digital format has largely increased. Yet, most of these materials are not open to be freely reused, shared or remixed. With the purpose of overcoming these barriers, the Open Educational Resource (OER) movement was founded to encourage and enable anyone to reuse and share content in an open manner. However, educators from higher education institutions are still resistant to embracing the use of OERs. Besides, there is a lack of technical skills to select and remix OER appropriately and a lack of awareness regarding copyright issues among academics. In this workshop, the participants will learn some concepts of Open Educational Resources and also how to use the H5P tool, an open source and free to use tool that enables anyone to create, share and reuse interactive HTML5 content without the need for any technical skills. With this, we hope to raise the participants' awareness of the OER movement and present a source that can help them develop content in an interactive, easy and open way.
Goals:
After this workshop, the participants will…
- … get to know the H5P tool and its functionalities;
- … be familiar with some key OER concepts, such as the 5R activities;
- … have some ideas about how these key OER concepts can be applied and explored with the H5P tool;

Planned activities:
This session is organized in three main parts:
1. Introduction and overview [30 minutes]
- Icebreaker;
- Brief introduction to key concepts of Open Educational Resources and the 5R (retain, reuse, revise, remix, redistribute);
- Presentation of the H5P tool and its functionalities;
- Ideas of how to create Open Educational Resources with the H5P.
2. Hands-on activity [90 minutes]
- Participants explore the H5P tool and create an Open Educational Resource about a given topic (e.g., presentation of the city where they are from or a city they would like to visit someday);
- 2-minute pitch to present what they have done;
- Then, they choose an OER created by others, and explore how to share and reuse the content, adding some more information.
3. Evaluation [60 minutes]
- They present the challenges and difficulties they faced during the practical activity. A link to padlet is going to be provided so that they can post there their ideas;
- Finally, they evaluate an OER prototype built with H5P using the User Experience Questionnaire.
