Transforming minds, impacting lives
This report gives an overview of programs implemented in October 2024; programs focused on a range of activities to promote access to quality education, physical activity, life skills development, good health and well-being.
Highlight for the period:
Eighteen (18) Deaf pupils at the Cape Coast School for the Deaf and blind are currently benefiting from reading sessions to improve their vocabulary and text comprehension; as several Deaf children struggle to learn how to read, this puts them at risk for lower educational attainment. The inspirED to read program will provide Deaf pupils with learning opportunities to improve their vocabulary, text comprehension and critical thinking skills thereby enabling them to develop positive reading habits.
During the period, the Learning Continues After Closing-bell initiatives which consists of three projects; the Homework Session for regular pupils in Cape Coast, the inspirED to read program at the Cape Coast school for the Deaf and Blind, and the Football for Hygiene program at the Aboom Special School and St. Francis Catholic school in Cape Coast. This report gives an overview of activities implemented under these various projects. First, activities under the Home work session, the reading club program then the Football for Hygiene project. This is followed by some human-interest stories.

Interventions
During the period, 70 basic school children living around Kotorkuraba benefited from extra tuition in key topics of science, mathematics and English at the Kaizen Center for improved understanding and were also assisted to do their homework. This program is currently being supported by the Oguaaman Focus Group; an association made up of concerned adults from Cape Coast living in Ghana and the diaspora. On Wednesday 9th October,2024 the CEO of Eyes In Dubai, Kinsley Kojo Aikins made a donation of 200 exercise books, 50 note books and other stationary to aid the beneficiaries with their learning.
Several Deaf children show through their written works that they have gaps in their grammar, tenses and word endings.The inspirED to read program focuses on providing learning opportunities to Deaf pupils to improve their reading and comprehension skills. As part of this program, our first reading club has been formed at the Cape Coast school for the deaf and blind. The club consists of 18 deaf pupils from Bs. 3 to Bs. 6. Who are engaged in weekly fun learning sessions to improve their vocabulary and develop visual skills. Nana Ama Buckman, Publishing Manager at Buckpress donated twenty (20) African writers story books to support the program, notable amongst the books is the “adventures of Kofi”; the series centers around the ridiculous situations that young Kofi Opoku gets into as he navigates life with his family and friends in Botikrom.
Football for Hygiene
The Football for Hygiene Program reached 110 direct beneficiaries across two (2) schools namely, Aboom Special School which consists of children with learning disorders and St. Francis Primary school. This program seeks to enhance knowledge on hand washing encourage positive handwashing habits. The beneficiaries at the Aboom special school were also engaged in structured football sessions to promote physical activity and psychomotor skills.
Nii Okai improves reading
After a month of attending extra lessons at the Kaizen Center, Nii Okai a KG 2 pupil of Aikins school in Cape Coast has improved his handwriting and reading of two and three letter words significantly. His class teacher stated in an interview that he has a better attitude toward learning, which she credits to his involvement in the after-school intervention.
