Figure out the size of your styrofoam plate(s). If you're using several smaller plates, then figure out the orientation of your plates and how many you will be using.
Trace your plate(s) in the desired orientation onto a sheet of paper. You should now have a paper with one or more plates traced onto it.
Draw your design onto the paper inside of the template area(s). Remember that your composition should use one continuous line.
Carefully tape your styrofoam plate underneath the template, so that your drawing paper is on top of the plate. Trace over your design, pressing down with your pencil hard enough to create an impression in the styrofoam. Don't press too hard, or the styrofoam will split!
Carefully remove the paper and tape from your plate(s). You are now ready to print! See Mx. Fleet for instructions.
Draw out your design on paper. Remember to use one continuous line!
'Trace' your design using wire, taping down sections as you go if desired. Use pliers to create more dramatic bends in the wire. If you compose your piece using multiple contour lines, use a higher gauge (thinner) wire to secure unattached pieces together.
Leave a section of wire behind so that you can mount your piece onto a stand. If your piece is free-standing, tuck the remaining wire in.
Have Mx. Fleet help you find or make a stand to mount your sculpture if it is not already free-standing.
This video will walk you through several basic stitches and techniques.
Create your images either digitally or traditionally. If you created your images traditionally, scan them into your desired editing app and remove the background for each drawing.
Save each individual drawing as a PNG file with a transparent background.
Access patternico.com and click 'Create New' in the top right hand corner. This will clear the work area.
Upload all of your PNG files. They will appear in the work space.
Drag and resize your images on the tiled plane to your liking. The plane will automatically adjust every time you move an object.
Save your file. You now have a tile-able, repeating pattern!
