Storyboard artist Kellye Perdue from Warner Bros Animation has some solid tips for beginners. She says: start by thinking about the kind of story you want to tell. Say your character’s going on an epic quest to fight a monster — maybe they’ve got that strong, heroic look, like Jacob from The Sea Beast. On the flip side, maybe your story’s about someone who doesn’t fit the typical hero mold — someone unsure, not exactly built for battle, kind of like Shrek or Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon. The point is: how your character looks and acts should reflect their role in the story. And it’s not just about the main character — that idea applies to every character, and even the world around them.

Another piece of advice? Look at the stuff you already love — the kinds of characters, clothes, and art you’re drawn to. That can give you clues about your own tastes and help you create something that really feels like you.

Now, author Mark Lawrence — best known for The Broken Empire series — puts it in a way only a novelist can:

“A good character doesn’t care about your plot. They’re not here to play along. You didn’t create them — they just showed up. Your job is to shut up, watch what they do, and write it down.”
