Ochin Pakhi, a Chicago-based Bengali band, is a vibrant ensemble of spiritually driven, community-focused musicians. Co-founded by Subhajit Sengupta, we specialize in Baul and Fakir folk songs, traditions from Bangladesh and West Bengal, India, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Our mission is to spread Bengali music and culture across the United States, making the rich and meaningful lyrics accessible through translations, discussions, and performances.
Since 2017, we've showcased Bengal's cultural heritage at various Chicago venues. Our band includes cellist Dr. Molly Greening and violinist Lucia Thomas, both of whom studied this music in India. Thomas, a two-time Fulbright fellow, underscores our commitment to cultural exchange.
We foster a vibrant music-loving community in Chicago's Rogers Park, holding weekly outdoor rehearsals during summer, inviting locals to participate, creating a shared environment of mutual respect and love.
"Ochin Pakhi" (অচিন পাখি) translates to “The unknown bird” and refers to the breath. This phrase was first used by Lalon Fakir (Shah), a prominent Bengali philosopher, Baul saint, mystic, songwriter, and social reformer.
We perform folk songs from West Bengal, India and Bangladesh, including Rabindra Sangeet (Songs of Rabindranath Tagore), Nazrul Geeti (Songs of Kaji Nazrul Islam), Baul-Fakiri, Bhatiyali (boatman songs), Jhumur (melodies from the western part of Bengal), and original compositions. We use ethnic instruments like ektara, dubki, khol, tabla, manjira, khamak, bansuri, dholak, banjo, and other drums.
Our mission is to present songs with colorful melodies and eclectic rhythm from greater Bengal to the world. We create a cross-cultural platform, and our journey of music is an endless one: rooted in tradition, yet transcending cultural boundaries.
Organizing events to build stronger communities is one of the important goals of our band. Over the years, we've organized numerous events and fundraisers, using our platform to amplify voices that often go unheard. From combating climate change to addressing other pressing issues, we try to contribute to the global conversation on important issues. We are musicians with a purpose, and every note we play is a step towards a better, more compassionate world.
