Hello friends my name is Ann and I'm your special programs coordinator at Kidspace Children's Museum. Thanks for joining me for this episode of Make Your Mark.
For this video's art practice we're going to be using a straw to make our very own nib pen. For this episode we're going to be using paper, watercolours, water, scissors and a straw.
This straw is going to become our brand new nib pen. To make it into a pen I'm going to use these scissors to cut into the straw. First I'm going to squish down the straw just a little bit and cut across it with my scissors. You may want to ask a grown-up to help you with that.
I'm going to squish it back and you see there's a little tiny squared off edge there I'm going to keep that. And right where I bent the straw there's a little line now. I'm going to cut into it and that's going to make the nib of our pen just like that.
Let's give it a try. So I'm going to be using my watercolours today as my inks. Let's try some shapes. I've got my green already started here.
I'm going to fill up the nib of my new pen. I'm going to try when I start with a line, nice. So you guys notice I'm not pressing very hard and my pen is kind of at an angle.
With that little cut down the middle that we made in our nib pen - that's actually allowing the pen to hold some of the liquid from the watercolour. The water travels up that nib and when we press it to the paper flows back down, allowing us to draw a square there. How about a circle and maybe a triangle.
Alright I know my new pen is good at making shapes, let's try some letters and I'm going to try the purple. Get lots of colour up in there just like that. Let's try it a B - very a light touch - C.
I want to keep practising with my new nib pen.
Thank you for joining us and making art today. Art is a practice and it's about experimenting with different techniques to find your voice and to make your mark.
Keep looking for our upcoming videos where we're going to be posting on how to use this nib pen for a cool printing technique.
See you next time.
