Hello, my name is Kathryn and I'm going to talk about a homework book in our collection.
This homework book was done by Jean Whiteman in 1933. She and her brother attended North Ryde Public School in the 1930s.
Her homework book displays a variety of subjects from English, arithmetic, hygiene, geography, mapping. It really is a magnificent display of all the subjects that they were studying.
There was an emphasis on neat book work and presentation. Jean used pen and ink in a variety of colours for her decorative headings and mapping.
This is an outstanding example of a sixth class pupil's work. We know this as her teacher marked many of her pages as 'excellent'.
'How I spent the holidays. Most of the holidays I spent riding. On one of the long rides I went with my pals to Artarmon. Another long ride I can remember well was to Carlingford. I was to ride over to Carlingford as dad wanted to plough around some citrus trees'.
This book is a significant part of our 1930s collection. It shows exactly what was being taught in classrooms of the time.
