Hermann Zapf, who has died aged 96, was a greatly respected figure in the world of type, or font, design; while millions of people the world over encounter his work daily, he remained largely unknown to the wider public.

Yet ever since the 15th century, when Gutenberg began transforming handwritten texts into modular fonts of movable type, the art of font design has been integral to the advance of literacy and civilisation.

Zapf designed his fonts using pen and paper and was such a master of calligraphy that he could write screeds of prose in longhand and make it look like typeface. The finesse of his line and his knowledge of historical models meant that his fonts show no signs of dating.

Hermann Zapf was born in Nuremberg, Germany, on November 8 1918, just as the First World War was drawing to a close and the Spanish Flu pandemic, which cost the lives of two of his siblings, was taking hold. As a child he was interested in technical subjects, and, as a teenager, devised his own secret alphabet to communicate with his brother and friends.

His interest in lettering was ignited in 1935 on a visit to an exhibition devoted to the work of Rudolf Koch (1876-1934), an eminent font designer and calligrapher from Nuremberg. He taught himself calligraphy studying examples in the city library and, after completing his apprenticeship, moved to Frankfurt, where he eventually worked for the Stempel Type Foundry, which, in 1929, had been the first to cast modern slab serif typefaces.

In 1942 his skill with the pen led to his being assigned to the job of making maps with a cartography unit based in Bordeaux. In his spare time he practised calligraphy, keeping notebooks of writings and lettering.

His Visitation will take place at Holy Cross Church on Friday from 3 pm to 8 pm and Saturday morning after 10 am. His Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
