South Hall is located on south campus, overlooking South Quad from the back. South is the largest dorm on campus with an occupancy of 240 and is a popular choice for Conservatory students due to its proximity to the Conservatory. The building is made up of singles, divided doubles, and quads and has a vast lounge space on the first floor as well as dance studios and a gym in the basement.
South has received mixed reviews on noise from the people I talked to about it. On one hand, multiple say South is much more forgiving than many of the larger north camus dorms. On the other hand, I heard horror stories about sound leakage and loud weekend nights.
Divided doubles pose the same problem they do in East in that they prevent privacy far less effectively than people think they do. That being said, this was not a chief complaint: South is insulated in a way that allows noise to travel clearly between floors and thus partying, sex, and conversations can be heard when present in a lot of rooms. I have personally experienced this sound even leaking into one of the dance studios. Furthermore, people are often loud and disrespectful of quiet hours in their rooms despite South having less of a strict party culture than other dorms. Just like East and North, the quads in South tend to be the noisiest rooms.
