Langston Hall (also known as North Hall) is the northmost dorm at Oberlin. With an occupancy of 218 students, Langston is the second largest dorm on campus and a popular dorm choice for athletes due to its proximity to Oberlin's athletic complex. Last summer, it received a renovation in which new bathrooms were added, floors were replaced in the rooms, and every single double was converted into a single.
My experience with noise pollution in Langston, having lived there, was largely negative. People do not respect quiet hours and the quad next door frequently has loud nights along with many other rooms in my hall. This is not just me either: I talked to multiple people who complained of loud parties in Langston and just generally disrepectful production of noise at inappropriate times.
One of this dorm's main issues are the walls: during the renovation over summer 2018, new walls and doors were installed so that students would be living in singles as opposed to doubles. The walls that were installed however, do not provide adequates amount of privacy due to the sound that leaks through. In fact, it is possible for me to have a conversation with my next door neighbor through the wall with both of us speaking in a normal speaking voice. Through my wall I have heard loud music, conversations I did not want to hear, sex, and every other slight movement such as drawers opening and closing.
