Our goal is to ensure that we are cultivating local and diverse aspiring Special Education Teachers who will act as the hub of support and services for students with disabilities at their school sites, ensuring an asset based, resourceful, and healing centered approach to serving as an Education Specialist.
We support Teacher Residents while they earn an Education Specialist Credential, plus a Master's in Special Education, from Alder GSE or CSU East Bay, while working in OUSD for at least 4 years.
Residency Timeline and Outcome
At Alder GSE, Teacher Residents earn a Master of Arts degree and an Education Specialist Credential in Mild/Mod Special Education. This one year program is 37 credit units and tuition is about $19,000.
At California State University East Bay, Teacher Residents complete this 2 year program earning a Master’s of Science Degree in Special Education (64 units) and an Education Specialist Mild/Moderate Preliminary Credential. There is an option to acquire a dual authorization in Moderate/Severe by completing 3 additional courses and fieldwork experiences. The Education Specialist credential and Master's degree come hand in hand at a cost of around $20,271 (1st year- $11,853; 2nd year- $8,418). However, teacher placement on the BA + 60 /column 4 of the salary schedule means that new teachers will earn thousands of dollars more each year. Other perks of the CSU-EB program include holding classes on OUSD campuses.
