Oak Hill MATHCOUNTS Club
Oak Hill MATHCOUNTS club is run by parent-volunteers. The main goal is to prepare for and to participate in the MATHCOUNTS competitions. MATHCOUNTS is a premier competition series for middle-school kids that has school, chapter, state and national levels. Participation in MATHCOUNTS preparation program is based on the tryouts.
Tryouts are held at the beginning of the year to narrow the pool of team candidates to 12-15 students of whom up to 10 will eventually be chosen to represent Oak Hill at the MATHCOUNTS competitions in February and March. Those 12-15 students will practice weekly before the team is chosen in January.
During practices students are solving problems from past MATHCOUNTS competitions, learning and practicing selected math topics, and doing practice tests. To be successful at MATHCOUNTS, in addition to regular practices at school students are expected to dedicate several hours a week to self studying at home, working on improving their problem solving skills under time pressure. This includes learning new concepts, mastering topics they are already familiar with, do speed and accuracy drills. Club coaches will be happy to help with developing competition preparation strategies, setting short-term and long-term goals for each student.
In January MATHCOUNTS club will hold the School MATHCOUNTS Competition that is open to any student at school. High performing students at the school competition who are not participating in the MATHCOUNTS preparation program might be invited to practices in January and may eventually make it to the team representing Oak Hill.
In addition to MATHCOUNTS the club will participate in several other local competitions for middle school teams, such as Lexington Math Tournament (LMT), Acton-Boxborough Math Competition (ABMC) and Purple Comet! Math Meet. Please review the list of competitions at the "Competitions" page. Participation in those competitions is open to any student at Oak Hill.
In 2018-2019 school year, Oak Hill team placed 4th out of 26 teams at the Metro Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition and qualified for the State MATHCOUNTS competition where it competed with 29 best teams from 7 Massachusetts chapters and finished 13th, earning the Best Rookie School award. Team members also earned top/perfect scores at many other competitions such as Math Kangaroo, New England Math League, IMLEM and got on Honor and Distinguished Honor rolls in AMC8 and AMC10.
Tryouts will be held on Monday, September 16, 2:30-4:30pm. Tentative location: School Library. Placement decision will be made by Friday, September 20. The tryouts are mandatory. If your kid is not able to attend the tryouts, please send an email to email@example.com and we will try to find an alternative day for testing. We kindly ask you to register your kids for the tryouts so we know the head count and can have enough copies of the test. Please follow this link to the registration page.
The club will meet on Mondays 2:30-4pm, room 152, starting September 23, 2019. Please see tentative schedule for the 2019-2020 school year.
We need your help!
The club is run by volunteers, is self-funded and is always looking for volunteers. We especially need parent-volunteers who can lead school practices. With more participation the program can be extended to support more students of various levels. There are many other volunteering opportunities beyond teaching. Please let us know if you can help!
