Academic Practice Track

The Sports Medicine academic track seeks residents eith with interest in Primary Sports Medicine or who would like to increase their knowledge in the evaluation and management of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. The track is flexible and can be tailored towards the resident’s interests.

The goals of the Sports Medicine Academic Track are:

1.) Expose the resident to the breadth of Primary Care Sports Medicine;

2.) Help the resident develop the advanced knowledge and skills to become proficient in the evaluation and management of musculoskeletal injuries;

3.) Participate in game/event coverage;

4.) Prepare the resident to apply for a Sports Medicine Fellowship position

Track Directors

Dr. Abdul-Aziz Ahmed

Dr. Abdul-Aziz Ahmed is an assistant attending physician in emergency medicine at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital. He also practices Sports Medicine at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center and is an instructor in medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Ahmed also runs the Emergency Medicine Orthopedics Clinic, an outpatient office that sees non-operative orthopedic patients referred from the emergency department.

Dr. Ahmed completed his M.D. degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and residency training in Emergency Medicine at St Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center. Following his residency training, Dr. Ahmed completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at North Shore University Hospital.

Dr. Natasha Desai

Dr. Natasha Desai is a board certified in Emergency Medicine with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Primary Care Sports Medicine. Dr. Desai went to medical school at George Washington University School of Medicine. She did her Emergency Medicine residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital/Icahn School of Medicine. Dr. Desai completed a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania where she worked with both the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Flyers. Dr. Desai currently is dual appointed between the Columbia Orthopedics Department and the Columbia Emergency Medicine Department and serves as the Team Physician for Columbia University Athletics. As a former collegiate gymnast at UCLA, Dr. Desai specializes in the female athlete and gymnastics medicine.
