Academic Practice Track
The goal of the ED Administration & Operations APT is to foster the development of future healthcare leaders. We welcome residents with a general interest in healthcare leadership, as well as those with specific interests in Quality/Patient Safety, Process Improvement, Patient Flow, Finance/Billing, Change Management, or any other administrative topic. Upon completion of track requirements, graduating residents will have: 1) gained the skills and experiences to successfully pursue a career in Emergency Medicine administration and healthcare leadership; 2) established mentoring relationships and built a personal network for leadership development within the NYP system and beyond; 3) complete an administrative project or scholarly activity to help advance the department’s operational goals while gaining hands-on administrative experience; and; 4) become leaders in Emergency Medicine at the departmental, institutional, state and national levels. .
Dr. Robert Tanouye, MD, MBA is the Associate Director of New York-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Emergency Department, the Associate Director of Healthcare Leadership and Management Fellowship at Weill Cornell's Department of Emergency Medicine, and the Assistant Director of Healthcare Leadership and Management Scholars Program at Weill Cornell Medical College. He serves Weill Cornell's Department of Emergency Medicine as the Physician Liaison for Billing & Compliance as well as Physician Scheduler since 2016. He is completing New York-Presbyterian's LEAD Academy for Physicians in 2021. He sits on New York ACEP's Practice Management Committee. He is a graduate of New York-Presbyterian's Emergency Medicine Residency and Tufts University School of Medicine MD/MBA in Health Management program.
As a former point guard, basketball coach, and training & development manager in a rapidly growing restaurant corporation, he is interested in team-based professional development and organizational leadership.
Dr. Mahesh Polavarapu, MD is Assistant Medical Director of New York-Presbyterian/Allen Hospital Emergency Department and Director of the Dr. Lorna M. Breen Emergency Medicine Fellowship in Healthcare Administration . He completed his undergraduate and medical degree course work at Northwestern University with a BA in Economics. Subsequently, he attended ChristianaCare Hospital in Delaware for residency where he stayed to complete an Administrative Fellowship. His professional interest is in cultivating a supportive culture for everlasting quality improvement and patient safety. His interest as track co-director comes from a desire to teach administrative & operational skills to junior learners, and mentor the next generation of leaders.
Dr. Jean Scofi, MD, MBA is the Director of Informatics & Analytics and the Assistant Director of the HLM Fellowship for the Weill-Cornell Department of Emergency Medicine. She completed medical school at the University of Southern California (USC) and residency at the Mount Sinai Health System in New York, where she served as chief resident. Following residency, she completed an Emergency Medicine Administration Fellowship at the Yale-New Haven Health System and obtained her Executive MBA at the Yale School of Management. Dr. Scofi is passionate about the intersection of clinical informatics, healthcare operations, and medical education.
