Each fall, NYC hosts "Climate Week," bringing together local experts and leaders from around the globe.
This year, we are using Climate Week as an opportunity to celebrate some of the Climate Heroes in NYC Public Schools with our Climate Leadership Awards on September 22!

Climate Leadership Awards
NYC Public Schools will honor over 150 educators, staff, and students who are championing climate solutions in schools. The winners are outstanding individuals and teams in a variety of roles: kitchen and cleaning staff, principals, central office staff, teachers, and students, showing appreciation for people who are working on sustainability every day, often behind the scenes.

Book Talk: Educating for a Climate Changed Future
Wednesday, September 23 (5-6:30PM)
Join Fernando Reimers, Margaret Wang-Aghania, and Meredith McDermott for a discussion of Educating for a Climate Changed Future: From First Order Impacts to System Level Transformation (Springer Nature Switzerland, 2026). This open access publication examines how schools and climate change shape one another and what it takes to build education systems that are genuinely ready for what's ahead. Drawing on comparative education and policy research and case studies, the book maps the gap between ambitious climate education policy and what actually happens in classrooms, identifies why so many systems stay stuck, and offers concrete strategies for change.
Together, we'll explore how students learn about climate, and what it takes to scale climate education across subjects, schools, and countries. We will also bring the conversation to ground, sharing what this looks like inside one of the largest and most diverse school systems in the world: New York City Public Schools.

Climate Education in Action: Realizing New York's Climate Requirement
Friday, September 25 (5-7:30PM)
Join us for an evening at the American Museum of Natural History during Climate Week NYC, co-hosted by SubjectToClimate, the Climate & Resilience Education Taskforce (CRETF), and New York City Public Schools Office of Energy and Sustainability, the Climate Mental Health Network (CMHN), and the Yale Program of Climate Change Communication (YPCCC).
This year’s event will feature a keynote from environmental educator Suzie Hicks and an interactive presentation by ecologist Carolyn Hall, as well as teacher presentations on bringing climate education into the classroom.
Youth Climate Action Grant
Youth Climate Action Grant
NYC is among the 300 global cities selected to join Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Youth Climate Action Fund efforts to engage youth in municipal climate solutions, building capacity, organizational sustainability, and trust with City government.
NYC Public Schools invites high school students to apply for funding for climate projects ($1-4K), with grantees receiving technical support and opportunities to share their projects with City leaders.
