The Institutional Supreme Student Council (ISSC) of Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) actively participated in the Action Planning Session spearheaded by the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) – Region VIII last August 18, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at UHR Conference Room, NwSSU main campus. This activity was conducted as part of the continuing collaboration under the signed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between CHR Region VIII and NwSSU for the establishment of the Center for Human Rights Education (CHRE). The session aimed to lay the foundation for CHR’s 2025 initiatives while strengthening the shared commitment of both institutions to advance human rights education across the university.
Around 20 representatives from NwSSU—including academic staff, student affairs personnel, research officials, human resources officers, planning staff, and student leaders—took part in the planning discussions. The ISSC, representing the student body, highlighted the importance of student involvement in civic engagement and human rights advocacy.
During the session, Mr. Joseph Roel C. Obrino, Information Officer of CHR Region VIII, discussed the mandate and advocacies of the Commission on Human Rights, emphasizing its role in protecting and promoting the rights of every Filipino. Meanwhile, Ms. Jonna Marie M. Ranes, Chief, Promotion and Advocacy Division gave a detailed presentation about the Center for Human Rights Education (CHRE) and facilitated the action planning process, engaging participants in identifying key initiatives for 2025. The action planning process was a collaborative effort that actively involved representatives from the student leaders, sectors of research, extension, and instruction. It primarily focused on planning activities and programs that can be linked to the promotion and integration of human rights education within the university. This ensured that the planned initiatives were comprehensive, inclusive, and relevant to the needs of the academic community.
The day-long session also included discussions on activity preparations, designation of focal persons, and joint strategies for integrating human rights education within the academic setting.
The ISSC expressed its gratitude to CHR Region VIII and the NwSSU administration for recognizing the role of students as active partners in advocacy and nation-building.
With this collaboration, the ISSC remains committed to supporting programs that empower students, uphold democratic participation, and strengthen the culture of human rights in NwSSU.
