University of Southern California Tuba Quartet

Jim Self, an esteemed tubist and dedicated educator, has made an indelible mark on the world of tuba music and education. As the founder of the USC Tuba Quartet, he built upon his rich professional experience with the Los Angeles Tuba Quartet, which included notable musicians such as Jim Self, Tommy Johnson, Roger Bobo, and Don Waldrop during the dynamic era of the '70s. Inspired by a passion for fostering chamber music experience among Thornton students, Self initiated the quartet, ensuring that four out of the six students in the Tuba Studio have the opportunity to participate each year.

Under Self's guidance, the USC Tuba Quartet has become a beacon of musical excellence and innovation. Beyond their regular performances, the quartet actively engages in commissioning new compositions and arrangements, contributing to the expansion of the tuba repertoire. One of their cherished traditions is the annual Tuba Christmas concert, a public event that has become a staple in the musical calendar for over 40 years.

In recognition of their dedication and talent, the members of the USC Tuba Quartet are beneficiaries of a newly established scholarship, further supporting and nurturing the next generation of tuba musicians. The quartet's commitment to excellence was underscored by their triumph at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in 2014, where they claimed first prize in the chamber music competition. This victory stands as a testament to their artistry, skill, and the enduring legacy that Jim Self has instilled in the USC Tuba Quartet.
