Thomas Janssen is an emerging artist from Oregon who is striving to become a professional euphoniumist and brass instructor. In 2019, he received a Bachelor of Music in Euphonium Performance under the direction of Michael Grose and a Minor in Music Technology from the University of Oregon. In 2021, Janssen earned his Master of Music in Euphonium Performance under the direction of Dr. Gail Robertson at the University of Central Arkansas. Last fall, he returned to the University of Oregon to start his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Euphonium Performance.
As an undergraduate student, Janssen participated in a variety of ensembles: principal euphonium in the Oregon Wind Ensemble, lead trumpet in the Jazz Lab Band, euphoniumist in the University of Oregon Brass Ensemble, bass voice in the University Singers, and tenor tubist in the UO Symphony Orchestra (to perform “Bydlo” from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition). As a member of Teuph (the University of Oregon’s tuba-euphonium ensemble), he has performed four prelude concerts for the Oregon Symphony Orchestra and a performance at the Northwest Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference (NWRTEC) in 2017.
At the University of Central Arkansas, Thomas was the Principal Euphonium in the UCA Wind Ensemble, Lead Trumpet in the UCA Studio Jazz Ensemble (top jazz ensemble), trombonist in the UCA Trad-Jazz Ensemble/UCA BearBones, and tubist in the Hendrix College Wind Ensemble. He also played 1st Baritone in the Natural State Brass Band (a semi-professional British Brass Band under the direction of Nevada Mills).
Janssen most recently won the Rich Matteson Jazz Competition at the 2023 International Tuba Euphonium Conference (ITEC). He also won 2nd place in the Euphonium Mock Band Audition Competition at the same conference. Janssen previously won the Euphonium Artist Solo Competition for the Virtual Tuba Euphonium Conference (VTEC) in 2021. Some of Janssen’s other notable competition results include: Winner of the Arkansas State Division of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Solo Competition twice (2020, 2021), 2nd place in the Eugene Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, and 2nd Place for the Northwest Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference’s (NWRTEC) Euphonium Solo Artist Competition in 2017 and 2018.
