Last minute words at a recent "Class C" in school tournament

One of the great parts of being a part of a large, international organization like the ATA is the competition opportunities that are available.
Being properly prepared for competition day will make sure the day goes smoothly and is a positive experience for your entire family.
Bring healthy snacks and lots of water. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I forgot my healthy snacks and had to depend on the on-site concessions. I fully advocate supporting the hosts through their concession stand, but as a competitor you need to know you will be ready to go at a moments notice. I find that snacking lightly throughout the day keeps my energy level up and helps me to stay on top of my game.
Make a new friend. Time and time again I hear stories of friendships forged through competition - each tournament turns into an opportunity for a reunion of friends from all around the globe. Take the time to talk to the other families near you, the competitors in your ring, the judges you meet - and find a way to keep in touch for the next time. The more people you meet, the more you will find authentic opportunities to support, cheer for, and encourage others. This is what it is all about!
Train, train, train. Because your competitors are. If you do the minimum number of classes, and don’t crosstrain or practice at home, you will find limited success in the competition ring. The importance of fitness to a competitor cannot be overstated! Also, one or two private lessons from your instructor will go a long ways towards learning those fine details that separate the medalists from the rest of the crowd.
Find, and print, the posted schedule - it can be hard to locate it on site and trust me, you will probably not remember the details when you arrive. Remember, though, that the times given are a very general estimate, so arrive early and bring plenty of patience. There will be lots to watch while you wait for your turn! Look for the XMA/Creative rings - they are not hard to find, with black uniforms and music. You will generally get to see some really creative and intricate presentations which are unique to every competitor. It is also fun to watch the black belt rings - especially teenagers - the sparring you will see is simply amazing!
Volunteer! Even if it is your first tournament, find a way to help out so the whole day goes more smoothly for everyone. Judges are always looking for help in the scorekeeper and timekeeper positions. Between rings approach the judges and let them know you are available if necessary. Are you a veteran competitor? Talk to your instructor about the possibility of training to become a judge!
Grandmaster Emeritus Soon Ho Lee recently shared his wisdom on why competition is important, and one of those points was not to wait until you feel 100% ready. Because in life we are rarely 100% ready for anything.
Can't wait to see you all at the next regional or national tournament!
