One of the lessons I learnt from the book “Live As A Learner” is the importance of having a childlike heart. In the book, the author says that a childlike heart is one that is simple, humble, and open. One of the learning activities I went was flower bouquet making, and there I could literally see what it means to have a childlike heart through the interactions with the host’s kids.
Through arranging the flowers, the kids were interested in what we were doing, and in the end, one of them made his own bouquet as well. I found it impressive how he could have this simple heart to just be willing to try and make the flowers without thinking so much (like whether it is too hard, too girly etc).
When I think back on the recent things that I learnt during this VTP (stamp making, flower bouquet, water colouring), I realised I was guilty of not approaching learning with the right attitude, as I keep having the preconceived notion that I’m just not good at arts and crafts and so, not very willing to put in my best effort, since I thought it will not look nice anyway. But looking back, I found that this could also be a form of pride and could hinder us from learning well. I learnt that sometimes, it is not really in the outcome (how well you speak, or how talented you are at crafts) but to simply learn and obey God’s commands with this simple heart.
