What is creative non-fiction? “Truth is stranger than fiction. And life is too interesting to be left to journalists,” writes novelist Walter Kirn. In this class, students will read, write and workshop creative non-fiction, reading short pieces by famous essayists alongside the work of their classmates. As humans, we make sense of the world by telling stories, yet in our age of mass disinformation, the skill of crafting a compelling and true narrative has never been more valuable. Topics to read and write about include media and cultural studies, science and nature writing, travel writing, autobiography, and the personal essay.
