This is an introduction to the art and craft of poetry writing. Focusing on the fundamental elements of poetry and the relationship of critical reading and creative writing, it explores role of imitation and innovation in writing poetry. It approaches poetry in dynamic relation to multiple traditions and in dialogue with other disciplines and ultimately as a form of investigation. Generative exercises highlight the importance of craft in poetic practice. The writing workshop, meanwhile, allows students to share their work and develop their skills in giving critical and productive feedback. Through the process of revision, students complete a portfolio of poems.
