People often disagree on the type of liberty to embrace but agree on the threats of oppression to avoid. This course, therefore, seeks to closely examine the characteristics of unfreedom. Students will learn about the various ways in which oppression can manifest in our lives and explore how it can be avoided. We will study works by notable authors from the past 300 years who have diagnosed various forms of despotism. Their insights will be applied to contemporary case studies where we will investigate whether they could help us address the issues of our world today.
