This course explores how and why the distinction between reality, representation, and illusion is growing ever more complex in a tech-saturated world. It draws together interdisciplinary approaches to the notion of “reality” from philosophy, physics, sociology, anthropology, critical theory, and media studies to explore the emerging problems and prospects of shifting notions of technologically mediated reality. Through curated readings, illustrative films, and classroom discussion and activities, students will be better equipped to navigate the increasingly hazy boundaries and entanglements of the real and the unreal.
