7.2.2 The Coordinate Plane

Definitions

• • Coordinate Plane --> Formed when two number lines intersect at a 90 degree angle

  • Origin --> The point where the two number lines intersect at (0, 0)

  • X-Axis --> The horizontal number line

  • Y-Axis --> The vertical number line

  • Quadrants --> The four sections of the coordinate plane

  • Ordered Pairs --> A pair of numbers used to locate points on a coordinate plane

    • An ordered pair looks like this --> (3, 5) or (-2, 6) or (-4, -8)

      • The first number listed in the ordered pair is an x-coordinate, which moves you horizontally on the on the x-axis

      • The second number listed in the ordered pair is a y-coordinate, which moves you vertically on the y-axis

        • You will always move along the x-axis first, then the y-axis second
