6.5.2 Variables and Expressions

Definitions:

• • Algebra --> A branch of mathematics that includes numbers and symbols

  • Variable --> A symbol, usually a letter, that represents an unknown number

  • Algebraic Expression --> Contains at least one variable and at least one operation (+, -, x ,÷, ² )

  • Evaluate --> Find the value of, or solve, an algebraic expression

  • Term --> When addition or subtraction signs separate an algebraic expression into certain parts

  • Like Term --> Terms that contain the same variable(s)

  • Constant --> A term without a variable(s)

You will notice that in each of the examples, you are given a variable that must be replaced with the given number for it. Once you've substituted in the number, solve it normally. Be sure to keep PEMDAS in mind.
