6.3.3 Ratio Tables

Ratio Tables

Definitions:

    • Ratio Table --> A table with columns that are filled with pairs of numbers that have the same ratio
    • Equivalent Ratio --> Ratios that express the same relationship between two quantities
    • Scaling --> Multiplying or dividing two related quantities by the same number/amount

The given table above is a Ratio Table. You will notice each of the given ratios, 1/3, 2/6, and 3/9 can all be simplified down to 1/3, meaning that they are equivalent.

Another Example of Scaling:

Since 25 does not go into 105, we must firstly scale down (÷) to a number that does go into 105. Since we know that 5 will go into 105, we can scale down 25 to 5 through division (25 ÷ 5). If we do this operation to the top column, we must also do it to the bottom column (10 ÷ 5 which equals 2)

Now all that is left is to figure out how many times 5 goes into 105, and scale up the bottom column by the same factor. Since 5 goes into 105 twenty-one times, we will multiply 2 x 21 to get our final answer of 42.
