6.2.4 Multiply Mixed Numbers

Multiplying Mixed Numbers

Definitions:

    • Mixed Number --> a whole number followed by a fraction
    • Improper Fraction --> a fraction where the numerator is larger than the denominator

Converting a Mixed Number into a Fraction:

    • Multiply the denominator (the number on the bottom of your fraction) by the whole number. Then add the numerator (the number on the top of your fraction) to it. Finally, set this new number over the given denominator.
      • For example: Let's say I have the mixed number 2 and 3/4. I would take 4 (the denominator) multiplied by 2 (the whole) which equals 8. I would then take 3 (the numerator) plus 8, which is 11. Now that I have done this, my final answer would be 11/4.
      • The video to the right will help illustrate the point.

Multiply a Fraction and a Mixed Number

You will notice that they convert the mixed number to an improper fraction before they multiply the fractions normally.

Multiply Mixed Numbers

Again, you will notice that both numbers are converted into improper fractions before being multiplied normally.
