What design of a nuclear power plant operating in Florida will maximize profits while providing an appropriate amount of power to the grid?
To answer this question, this nuclear plant was broken up into 3 subsystems (Nuclear Reactor, Power Conversion System, and Cooling Tower).
First, these 3 subsystems were optimized to achieve a specific subsystem objective function. After, the subsystems were combined and optimized for the overall objective function of maximizing profits.
The difference in design variable values between the sub-system optimization and overall optimization was analyzed to derive meaningful insights about the relationships between design variables and outputs.
Subsystem Objective: Maximize the amount of energy produced per unit energy of heat added.
Subsystem Objective: Maximize the amount of heat dissipated per unit of energy added.
