ORIENTATION bisexual
APPEARANCE of average height and build, liam looks like the everyday sort of man. he has short, tidy blonde hair, blue eyes and the occasional hint of five o'clock shadow, which he keeps fastidiously at bay prior to entering the wasteland. FACECLAIM samuel caleb hunt.
PERSONALITY like many institute scientists, liam was raised to try and be the smartest person in the room at any point in time. while that makes him clever and decidedly book-smart, it also means he has the capacity for great arrogance and, therefore, great folly. he's proud of who he is and what he's capable of; he revels in challenge and, even if they don't know it, using his cleverness to outpace those around him. what this hasn't done is erased his capacity for compassion, however. he believes firmly in the rights and humanity of everyone - including synths. because of his sheltered upbringing, he has a great penchant for naivety, can be tactless in social situations and sometimes appears quite withdrawn to those around him.
liam binet was born in the institute on february 19, 2261, to alan and eve binet. the shyest of his peers, he grew up with a heightened sensitivity to the world around him. because he was so visibly emotional as a child, the adults in his life continued to write him off even as he grew up. scientists were to be rational and clinical, and liam, decidedly, was not.
this view of him further solidified when, at age twelve, liam lost his mother, eve, to illness. afterwards, he withdrew from normal social interaction. for years, his main -- and often only -- companion was the terminal in he and his father's quarters. he took to learning all he could about writing and manipulating code. it didn't get him taken seriously, but served as a personal reminder of the power of his own knowledge.
when liam was sixteen, his father introduced a synth replica of his mother to their small family. for months, he refused to so much as look at the "replacement," but would, in time, come to accept her maternal role. this synth version of eve became a friend and confidant but never, ever a replacement for his real mother.
in 2283, liam, fed up with the constant dismissal he faced from other scientists in the institute, embarked on his most ambitious mission yet: he was going to free a synth to the wasteland. at first just a challenge, he soon realized this freedom was not a game to the synths who so desperately vied for it. soon after the first escape, he partnered with z1-14, a sentient synth, to identify and release more synths to their new life above ground.
