APPEARANCE even before being recreated as a synth, catherine never looked suited to wasteland living. however, her small, almost delicate, build never stopped her from embracing life in the wasteland before, and it certainly won't now. she posseses a youthful, open face, marked by rounded cheeks and warm, brown eyes. her skin is lightly sunkissed and dotted with freckles. when she smiles, one might note the crookedness of her left canine tooth -- an endearing addition to her already bright grin. her hair is a mousy brown shade, often cropped close to her chin, as long hair tends to get in the way in the lab. she prefers comfort over style when it comes to her clothing and often wears well-worn jeans and t-shirts. FACECLAIM daisy ridley.
PERSONALITY catherine is best described as a hopeful woman, driven by a desire to do good in the world around her. even still, she's not what one would consider short-sighted or lacking in nuance. before she's a scientist, catherine is caring and intuitive, always the first to notice if someone around her is in need of some extra attention, care, or compassion. this inclination for nurturing others comes naturally, and she shows signs of maternal feelings for others long before becoming pregnant with she and james's child. while she is deeply ambitious, it's with a different aim than her project purity counterparts. she wants only to improve the world, not prove herself or receive accolades for doing so.
the real catherine carson was a young woman who grew up in the scattered caravan town that would later become canterbury commons. she spent her childhood alongside her best friend, madison li. the two girls were known for getting up to mischief and concocting experiments and schemes when their parents weren't around to supervise. due to the heavy trade in their area, they had access to materials often unavailable to other wastelanders, including mounds and mounds of books. when their parents realized their voracious appetites for academia were enough to keep them occupied, they began bringing them books from their own travels, too.
catherine and madison spent hours combing over books of all kinds; they were particularly fond of anything scientific, especially the subjects of hydroponics, water purification and solar energy. during their teens, they began to dream up ideas: madison, in the name of scientific advancement, and catherine in the advancement of mankind.
unlike most wastelanders, catherine grew up as a rather devout christian and saw making the wasteland a better place as her god-given mission. in some ways, this changed when she met james tyler in her early twenties. he was the first man she ever met who possessed knowledge to rival her own. in him, she saw a challenge, a partner to push her further when she stagnated, and hope for a future. a family. quickly, she, madison and james became a trio, bonding through their shared interest in science. within a few years, they embarked upon project purity: catherine's dream of bringing clean water to the capital wasteland.
at the age of 27, she fell pregnant with she and james's child. the promised arrival of new life invigorated the team. catherine already loved the baby growing in her belly; she wanted to bring about a better world for her to grow up in.
unfortunately, catherine passed away when giving birth to her child, leaving her to be raised by her father.
a little over ten years later, ct-10 wakes to the cold, sterile labs in the institute, all sorts of memories knocking around in her brain - some of them almost hers, but undoubtedly belonging to madison li. the last thing she remembers is her own confused expression, her eyes rolling back in her head as james hovered over her to begin cpr, and her baby was wheeled out of the room.
