Intro to Open Water Coastal Kayaking
September 7-9 2018
This class is full. Contact Bill Porter to be added to the wait list.
Ever wish you could explore our beautiful coastline, or maybe take one of the hundreds of trips between here and Southeast Alaska? A few of NSSKA's more experienced paddlers are able to do this every year, but now you can be on your way to paddle in their wakes too!
Our training coordinator, Bill Porter, has enlisted Calvin Croll and his assistant to offer an introductory class geared towards paddlers with intermediate-level skills. (Calvin is an instructor with Body Boat Blade and successfully solo-circumnavigated Vancouver Island last winter.) The goal of this class is to give you the awareness and basic skills to safely take short journeys in the coastal environment. You’ll learn how to read the surf zone, practice launching and landing, and how to do rescues in ocean swell. This class will be held at Hobuck Beach near Neah Bay.
For this class we want you to be comfortable:
- Doing wet exits and have experience doing assisted and self-rescues
- Paddling in bumpy water
- Putting a boat on edge to turn and some practice with bracing
Cost for the 2-1/2 day class is $300 per kayaker. Maximum number of students is 7, so contact Bill Porter soon with any questions or to sign up.
