The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide opportunities as well as challenges for developing countries, since the cost of its implementation can be high, but still bring benefits that persist in the long-term. This event organized by the NOVAFRICA Student Group, with the support of NOVAFRICA and Nova SBE, will analyse the implementation of the SDGs in Africa with the focus in two goals: End Poverty and Decent Work and Economic Growth.
Africa has made great progress on the Millennium Development Goals, especially in areas related to health and education. According to the United Nations “the advance registered by Sub-Saharan Africa was the fastest among all developing regions, while the Northern part of the continent achieved other targets, including those on poverty and hunger reduction, universal primary education, children and mothers' health, as well as sanitation”.
Despite the adoption and progress toward the SDGs worldwide, we believe it is possible to go even further and foster development with better and tailored policies, considering the heterogeneity within the continent.
Objectives of the event
End Poverty (SDG1) and Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG8) are among the top priorities for everyday Africans and are goals in which the international community, but also African governments can do more and better.
The Africa Day & SDGs is an event in which experts from different areas can debate and contribute with ideas to implement and achieve the SDGs in Africa. The mission is to contribute to a roadmap for the continent to build prosperity and be ready for the future.
A global view of Africa and insights into how the Agenda 2030 has been responding to the challenges facing the African continent. It is also instrumental to understand and evaluate the actions taken by the African governments and other non-government agencies organizations to address the SDGs, and assess how the pursuit of these objectives can be finance in a sustainable way.
