Modules: General Pathology & Diseases (Year 1); Paediatric Vision Management (Year 2); Low Vision and Community Optometry (Year 3)
General Pathology & Diseases provides students with foundational knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the major human body systems. Students will learn the biochemistry processes in normal human physiology. The interrelationships of the body systems and how they maintain homeostasis are examined.
Paediatric Vision Management covers visual development, eye examination and management of paediatric patients.
Low Vision and Community Optometry covers the relevant principles of public health with an emphasis on the epidemiology of vision problems, especially those affecting geriatric as well as paediatric patients. Delivery of eyecare services in a hospital environment will also be discussed.
Projects: Conducting eye education and screening
A series of projects were designed with the partner, involving three levels of students. Year 1 students engaged with seniors over 3 sessions; they taught the seniors mobile applications such as Youtube and Whatsapp. They also got to better understand them. Year 2 students conducted an eye talk and held simple eye-related activities and games for children while Year 3 students planned and organised an eye screening exercise for the elderly.
Module: Geriatric and Low Vision
This module examines the vision care for an ageing population. Students will study the prevalence of age-related eye diseases in Singapore and other countries, and how they affect the function and quality of life of the elderly. Students will also gain skills in assessment of visual impairment and the prescription of low vision aids.
Project: Conducting an eye screening exercise for the elderly
Students applied what they learnt in class in an eye screening programme. This enabled them to interact with, identify eye conditions in elderly participants, and provide one-on-one explanations which gave them insights into how they might better manage elderly patients. 20 seniors were referred for further assessment either at Ngee Ann Optometry Centre (NPOC) or with an Ophthalmologist.
Module: Singapore & World Issues
This module exposes students to a wide range of global issues viewed and discussed in the context of Singapore as a nation state. Students are guided to critically examine current affairs from various perspectives and develop an appreciation of the dynamism behind real world problems and possible solutions. The intent of this module is to develop thinking students with well-considered perspectives who are able to articulate reasonable opinions, make thoughtful decisions and informed choices as active citizens in society.
Project: Surveying migrant workers
Students conducted different surveys with migrant workers (MWs) to collect data for SGAHC, AXA Singapore, DBS Bank, and ItsRainingRaincoats (IRR). The survey for SGAHC and AXA looked into MWs' financial and insurance needs whilst that for DBS looked into finding out how many of them had/did not have bank accounts as well as their comfort level with using cashless transactions. The survey for IRR sought to find out if there are financial risks posed to MWs given unrestricted access to casinos. The data collected resulted in the launch of an insurance product targeted at protecting MWs’ remittance stream to their families. It has also helped to convince remittance companies to collaborate with AXA to come up with a remittance service-linked insurance. Data was also presented to policy makers to help towards tightening safeguards for low-income MWs so that they may receive the same protection as citizens from potential negative influences of casinos. Through the interactions with the MWs, students learnt about issues that they faced working in Singapore.
