Director’s Note
Miss You Like Hell
11/15/23
In February 2020, I was asked to audition for a production of Miss You Like Hell in Philadelphia, PA, where I was born and raised and worked
for many years prior to my time at ASU. As we all know, COVID hit the next month, so the production never came to fruition. But once I started
listening to the cast recording of Miss You Like Hell on Spotify, I couldn’t stop. I was immediately drawn to this musical for many reasons. There
is a contagious rhythm throughout the piece that feels like the human heartbeat. There is an incredibly strong female presence, with
strong female leading characters and an all-female creative team. As a Sephardic Jewish woman who speaks Spanish, I also
love the use of the Spanish language throughout the play and the representation of Latinx/Hispanic characters.
Miss You Like Hell’s realistic depiction of the experience of undocumented immigrants in the United States is another central
element of the piece. In my work as a director and choreographer, I aim to use the performing arts as a vehicle for positive social
change. By following Beatriz’s story, we see her struggles as an undocumented Mexican American woman. We feel her fear and
anxiety from always looking “over my shoulder.” By empathizing with Beatriz, I hope you can better understand the plight
of undocumented immigrants in our country and consider supporting your fellow community members who may have a similar story.
At the very end of the show, Olivia has a line that I find crucial to my concept of the play. She says, “We are not rafts, we are not even islands, we are the ocean.” I see this as a metaphor for how we as people are all connected, a realization that helps Olivia feel less depressed and more hopeful about her relationship with her mother. By the end of the show, I hope that you feel that you, too, are “the ocean.” We are all one community. I hope Miss You Like Hell reminds you about the power of family and community across borders, both physical and personal.

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts acknowledges the twenty-two Native Nations that have inhabited this land for centuries. Arizona State University’s four campuses are located in the Salt River Valley on ancestral territories of Indigenous peoples, including the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and Pee Posh (Maricopa) Indian Communities, whose care and keeping of these lands allows us to be here today.
