An Insight on Dentures

Dentures are prosthetic devices used for replacing missing teeth. They are sustained by the hard and soft tissues found inside the oral cavity. There can be several causes of tooth loss that may lead to the need for dentures, but the most common are tooth decay and periodontal disease.

When do You Need Dentures?

  • When you have missing teeth and it becomes difficult for you to perform normal activities such as eating.
  • You have swollen gums and/or tooth aches.
  • Your teeth have shifted or moved, creating gaps.
  • You feel conscious about your teeth.

Types of dentures offered:

With full or complete dentures, an acrylic base is fitted onto your gums. The roof of the mouth is covered by the upper denture, and the lower denture holds your tongue.

These prosthetics are personalized at a laboratory using impressions that dental experts take of the mouth. After having a closer look at your mouth, our dentist will determine which one of the three kinds of dentures are best for you.

  1. Classic Full Dentures

This treatment is offered to patients requiring replacement of their existing dentures. We take dental measurements and impressions. Wax dentures are then created for measuring comfort and fit. Once our dentists and patient are happy with the fit, acrylic dentures are made.

  1. Immediate Full Dentures

Immediate full dentures are inserted once the remaining projections are pulled out. (The dentist takes measurements and creates models of the patient’s jaw during prior visit.) While with immediate dentures patients never have to stay without their teeth, these prosthetics have to be relined a few after a few months of use. The reason behind this is that the bone that supports the teeth tends to reshape as healing takes place, loosening the denture.

  1. Partial Dentures

Partial dentures have the structure of a metal attached to the natural teeth of the patient. At times crowns have to be placed on the patient’s natural teeth as anchors.

Getting the right fit for your dentures is extremely important to enjoy successful results. A good dental clinic takes careful impressions of your mouth and makes sure your dentures are customized at a trusted lab. When the prosthetics fit right, they offer a smile that works well.

A dentist in Maryland can help you select partial or full dentures based on the teeth that you need replaced.

Every year thousands of patients replace damaged and missing teeth with dentures and other alternatives, such as crowns, bridges and dental implants. Do not delay in replacing those missing teeth. Book an appointment with a good clinic to learn what is best for your budget and situation.
