History of Nottingham

Nottingham Castle is a palace in Nottingham, England, in a commanding point known as "Castle Rock", with cliffs 130 feet high toward the south and west. In the Middle Ages it was a significant royal stronghold and infrequent royal abode. By the sixteenth century it was in need of repair and was to a great extent destroyed in 1651. The Duke of Newcastle later erected a manor on the site, which was torched by rioters in 1831 and left as a ruin. It was later revamped as a museum and art gallery, which is still being used today. Little of the first château endures, however ample parts stay to give an impression of the design of the site.
