A Mentor is a "trusted counselor or guide." Mentoring, therefore, is a relationship in which a person with greater experience and wisdom guides another person to develop both personally and professionally. Volunteering to be a Mentor is a serious commitment due to the potential impact you may have on a Sailor's career. Being mentored provides insurmountable personal and career guidance. Here at NOSC Sacramento, we strive to promote voluntary, self-initiated, personal mentorship consistent with competent professionalism. Our goal is to champion mentorship, retention, career satisfaction, and career growth of our sailors by developing a community of dedicated senior mentors and quality mentorship tools.
—IMPORTANCE OF MENTORSHIP—
Mentoring, both formal and informal, is an important part of every culture.
A mentor’s advice and guidance helps develop and prepare their mentee for growth.
Deliberate, effective, and consistent mentorship leads to greater professional and personal development and can contribute to career success.
Mentorship is especially important before key career decision points.
It is incumbent upon every Navy leader to mentor and guide their Sailors throughout their careers, supporting and developing them into our force’s future leaders.
In order to develop strong sailors to lead the future of the Navy, senior sailors must develop sailors through mentorship.
