CANALE, SHEKINAH C.

Field Study Subject Biography

Hello! I’m Shekinah Trizia Canale, a 21 years old student of Polytechnic University of the Philippines. This is my last year of studying for a Bachelor in Business and Teaching Livelihood Education Major in Information Communication Technology (BBTLED-ICT).

During my Field Study 1 and 2 at North Fairview High School, I was allocated to observe and assist Ms. Shanin Estavillo, an ICT teacher of grade 11 students. She handles three classes which specifically handle computer programming subjects and animation. As I was observing and assisting her, I learned a lesson, one of the best, teaching is like having a different type of friendship. Being a teacher does not mean that you have to be grumpy every time, making your students comfortable means more to them because they feel like you want to be connected to them. And that is one Ms. Shanin’s tip and lesson to us.

Beliefs on Teaching and Learning (Pre and Post FS)

Before our field study, I believe that teaching was easy and that the teachers are just giving students knowledge about what's written in the lesson plan and giving an activity right after. But I was wrong, after observing the teachers and the students, I realized that teachers should not just be good but also be an effective one because they are part of student's learning. And also, it is challenging because teachers truly never know what each day is going to bring that's why I admire all teachers out there for being always prepared and creative every day.

Retrospection

All these experiences I had from our field study will leave a lesson and good memories in me. I had a great time observing and assisting our critic teacher. I was given a chance to teach all of the classes Ms. Shanin handles, and I can say that teaching is a challenging and not easy profession. A relief and satisfaction when you see that your students were interested and learning from you was priceless. As a pre-service teacher who used to hate being a teacher back in high school, I can now say that teaching is not for people who just want to earn money, but for all chosen people who have a heart to teach and to connect with children.
