North Dakota is rich in culture including those of the tribes who were here before European colonization. Five North Dakota tribes are recognized as nations by the US government:
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark embarked on a great journey exploring the territory gained from the Louisiana Purchase. Along the way, they stopped near current Washburn to make camp for the winter with the Mandan tribe. There, they met Sacagawea who would help guide them for the rest of the journey.
Daily life on the prairie was tough long ago! Back then, you couldn't just go to the store for things you needed. Almost everything you needed had to be made on your own--from bread to clothes to homes!
North Dakota provides so many great resources for our country and the world--from gardening to large scale farms, from oil to wind energy, and even some interesting fossils!
