I made this lantern/windchime in Maya and Zbrush to practise sculpting a stylised prop. Figuring out how to exaggerate shapes was a lot of fun.
This prop fits into a world where deceased loved ones are honoured and remembered by hanging a lantern such as this one into a big, central Soul tree. The lantern is created in the image of the lost soul, and the candle is lit by Soul fire, an immaterial flame that was used to cremate the body and burns eternally.
The Soul tree filled with lanterns and windchimes "sings" when the wind blows, so it is believed the wind carries the voices of the deceased souls.
I plan to continue working on this model to make it game-ready.
