Dragons feature in legend and myth around the world. Records of the dragon being a shape-shifter with a human form are featured in Celtic legend. Ancient Brittonic leaders (such as Maelgwn Gwynnedd, Urien Rheged, Mynyddod Mwynfawr, Owain Gwynedd, Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, and Owain Glyndwr) are people described as dragons in their original legends. Modern human interpretation sees this as literary symbolism, but we know better, given the same rich and accurate detail of every other nonhuman entity within the same folklore.
Faeries are a race of beings who originate from their own home realm on this earth -- Faerie-- often called the Otherworld. Faeries are most prominently detailed in Celtic folklore; including Old English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, but also range to include Old Norse, Brazilian, and Slavic lore. There are many different species of Faerie; from the Sidhe people to the creature Puca, and from gnomes to centaurs. There are people, creatures, and animals of Faerie. Common respectful terms historically used for these beings are The Good Neighbors, The Folk of The Air, The Folk of The Hills, The Peaceful People, The Hidden People, and The Silent Folk.
Weres are shape-shifters who can shift into their animal form. The most common is the wolf, but other forms may include big cats, bears, or even foxes or dogs.
Much of old shifter information in the early online community is based around the experiences of being a were.
Shapeshifters are nonhumans with the ability to physically shift into a form other than human.
There are stories of shapeshifters all across the globe: The notable werewolf features in lore as old as Greece and Rome, and appears in German, French, Scottish, and Irish legends-- with a much more benevolent light cast on them by the latter two countries. Werecats are prominent in South and Central America, Asian, and African lore. Lore and records of other animal shape-shifters are abound as well.
Shapeshifters have made up the majority percentage of the online nonhuman community consensus historically.
This category covers any kind of shape-shifters that have a shifting form other than an animal (were) form or other than any described form in prior sections.
Shape-shifters with the ability to change into multiple forms are termed polyshifters. They have two or more shifting forms and experience development phases and shifts for each one. They may practice shifting into these forms, or their shifts may happen to them. These forms can be animal or of myth in origin.
Merpeople are featured in folklore across continents. From Danish to Haitian lore, merpeople are often described to have the ability to change into a human form, and come from a realm under the sea. Merpeople are said to have magickal or mystical abilities, and can bestow such abilities as 'gifts' to people they whisk away and return to land.
As of now, we do not have a section for other types of nonhumans due to them being less developed than other parts of the community, but you may find outlying information on some of them here.
