Since it looks like GT5's still another decade or two away from release, racing gamers need everything they can to survive the wait, and this is just about the most creative way we've seen to do that. At a glance, Nokia's Ovi Maps Racing looks like a pretty simple, standard 2D racer with an overhead view, but its secret sauce lies in the map: it can turn pretty much any street in the world into a racecourse. The game lets you chart out your heated battle using nothing more than Ovi Maps data and your finger, meaning Manhattan, Prague, or your folks' quiet, peaceful neighborhood are all potential targets for your high-speed bedlam. Seems like a great way to inject limitless replay value into an otherwise plain-vanilla racer, doesn't it? It'll work on any of Nokia's Symbian^1 (formerly known as S60 5th Edition) devices, and -- for now, anyway -- it's free. Follow the break for a quick promo video.

NHRA Championship Drag Racing for THQ Wireless. Work through the ranks as a drag racer and compete in an NHRA drag racing tournament. I was responsible for finishing this game off, and became the lead coder about half way through the development, I was also the main porter for this game, making it work on hundreds of mobiles. It was great to work on a game published by THQ who have now unfortunately gone bankrupt.

We received entries from 18 different countries for the next big solution for more sustianable tires. Our team of tire experts chose four amazing finalists that take part in the nail-bitingly exciting finals event at the end of January at our tire test center White Hell in Lapland, Finland. As we are racing against the clock for a more sustainable future, time is also limited for their pitch: they have to pitch their innovation to the panel of judges from a car speeding on lap on a frozen tire test track.

Wow, very impressive to pull of a racing game with these limitations. Honestly I didn't expect it to work as well as it does, car handling feels good. If you continue working on this I think you should try adding some kind of drifting system :)

Well done!

The opening menu in Nokia Racing gives two modes: single player and Bluetooth multiplayer. I enlisted a volunteer with my Nokia X6 and then went racing with my N8. One of the handsets acts as 'host' for the game, while the other(s) 'join' it - this works well but does require patience, since the games takes a good 15 to 20 seconds to establish the connection(s).

In addition to all of the above, there's an extra gameplay element, a bit of secret sauce, that's present in Nokia Racing and which most game titles completely ignore: once a game is over, you're put straight back into the car and you're off again. No need to tap a menu, no chance to think "Maybe I'll call it quits for now", you're already racing and hazards are scrolling towards you. "Oh why not, just one more game..." 0852c4b9a8
