Description: Demolition of more than 50% of the roof structure of a Contributing rated, one-story, single-family residential building.
Staff Recommendation:
FEMA survey research estimates the construction of 4917 Carondelet 1875-85. The 1896 Fire Insurance map shows the front center hall building with rear service areas attached to the main massing of the building. Some time after 1951 a gable was added to the rear service wing and encapsulation between the main center hall portion of the building and the service wing. The main portion of the building retains it's massing and historic detailing.
The proposed scope of work has 68.6% demolition/encapsulation. However, the amount of demolition/encapsulation of the historic fabric that predates 1951 is 39.4%. The removal of the non-historic materials at the rear of the building will ultimately remedy the roof line issues caused by the previous unsympathetic additions from the late 20th century. For the aforementioned reasons Staff recommends approval of the demolition with the proviso that the dormer at the front of the building be removed from the scope of work.
Recommendation: Approval with the proviso that the dormer at the front of the building be removed from the scope of work.
