Tobique We Are Remembering
Revitalization Project
Revitalization of culture and language is essential to improving and reversing the impacts of systemic racism and cultural genocide for the next seven generations. To redress these ‘legacies of colonialism’ that have left many generations with little to no knowledge of their Wolastoqey language, traditional values, teachings, ceremonies, and cultural norms, the Neqotkuk N’tetli Mikwi Tahasoltipen - Tobique We Are Remembering is dedicated to revitalizing Wolastoqey language, culture, and traditions.
Wolastoqey latuwewakon is an oral language, and as a nation, we continue to face language loss due to colonization. This project recognizes the efforts of our language keepers in reclaiming our language, and we aim to contribute to that ongoing work.
By blending the depth of ancestral wisdom with the endless possibilities offered by digital platforms, this initiative not only helps preserve Wolastoqey culture but also creates opportunities to share these treasures with a broader audience. It acts as a guiding light, leading both present and future generations to a greater understanding and appreciation of the profound legacy handed down through time. May its work inspire us to honour and protect the rich culture that lies at the heart of our identity as a community.
The Project's Three Core Activities
By collaborating with various community members to gather personal experiences and teachings, we captured some of the history of Neqotkuk and other cultural significances as a wonderful way to preserve and share valuable knowledge with the community and beyond. These community members are not only honouring the past but also ensuring that this important information is passed down to future generations.
Through these podcasts, we have had the opportunity to amplify voices and provide a platform for sharing diverse perspectives and narratives. By documenting these stories, we are hoping to create a legacy that will endure for years to come. These podcasts can serve as a powerful tool for storytelling, educating, and connecting people with their culture.
Creating short films to capture stories, history, and knowledge is a powerful way to preserve and share valuable information with community members and future generations. Short films have the ability to condense complex narratives into easily digestible and engaging formats, making them ideal for conveying important messages and lessons.
The short films that were created with numerous community members, have such important cultural teachings and histories of Neqotkuk embedded. By sharing these stories through short films, you are not only preserving history but also fostering a sense of unity, understanding, and appreciation among community members. By utilizing visual storytelling, these films can evoke emotions, spark discussions, and create a lasting impact on viewers.
Woliwon to all of our short film participants!
More than 50 books were created through the book writing workshops. These books serve as valuable resources for future generations to learn about the traditions, stories, and teachings of Neqotkuk ensuring that the cultural legacy is passed on and cherished. These books also serve as an initiative for learning Wolastoqey latuwewakon. The combination of written text and audio components provides readers with a better opportunity to learn the language and follow along with each book.
Through participation in book-writing workshops, participants have not only contributed to the creation of a diverse collection of literature but have also played a crucial role in promoting cultural awareness and appreciation within and beyond the community. The act of writing and sharing stories is a powerful way to connect people, preserve history, and inspire others. This remarkable accomplishment highlights the importance of community-driven initiatives in preserving and promoting cultural heritage, and it showcases the creative potential and unity that can be achieved through collective efforts.
