The Arlington Hotel
In 1873, William Boyce built a hotel on the corner of King Street and Ann Street. Construction was complete in 1874, and it was named the Royal Hotel. It is thought that Neil MacKinnon changed the hotel's name to the Arlington after he purchased the building, the date of which is unknown.
In 1916 Mr. MacKinnon died, and the hotel closed briefly. 1916 was also the year the Ontario Temperance Act passed, which could have been a factor in the closure. However, Mrs. Mackinnon reopened the hotel soon after with the help of her sons.
The hotel went through a series of owners until it was eventually torn down in 1958. The hotel's success during the early 20th century can largely be attributed to its proximity to the train station, as travelers would often stay at the Arlington.
