Jackson Block/McPhee Block
In 1878, Nathaniel Jackson built his three-story Jackson Block on this empty plot of land. The building was occupied by a few different businesses in its time. On February 2nd, 1885, a fire started in one of the businesses in Jackson Block, Bishops Hardware Store, which destroyed the building.
The two-story McPhee Block was built in its place. The block contained the furniture and undertaking business of McPhee and Box, as well as a grocery store. Bad luck struck again when the McPhee Block burned down in 1929, and the plot has remained vacant since.
McPhee was one of the undertakers who went to Halifax in 1917 to assist with the deaths caused by the Halifax Explosion on the harbour.
