Recently I was tasked with coming up with a level design concept for a 2D game. Realizing I don't have any 2D works to share, I made one. The exercise was to draw up some plans for the Whomping Willow from Harry Potter:
First I start with brainstorming out what I know, and researching Harry Potter Whomping Willow online to find out more about it.
Next I try to think of the space I want to create and how I want the willow to lock off areas. I start to narrow down some gameplay abilities as well
I use the graph paper to help identify the areas and all the element spacing and placements. Then later I spill my drink all over it 😅
I keep thinking about what the tree could do, and for the sake of time pick a few to move forward with.
Now comes the fun part! Getting all these things going in Unity engine!
I bring in my graph paper version and check it out with a player, being a top down level this is a very easy tactic. I get the scale about where I want it and color the picture to help sell the different parts while I playtest the space.
After being happy with the layout, I move onto finding some free tile sets and start overlaying the hand drawn design.
Being excited about the exercise, I decided to build out some of the abilities so I could see the gameplay flow better:
Fire Spell: Can destroy bramble bushes
Freeze Spell: Can freeze enemies and environmental hazzards.
Shrinking Spell: Can become small and get into small holes, like into the Whomping Willow.
Hagrid : gives some narrative about whats going on.
Finaly, I add collision to the walls, now it's ready for others to playtest!
Now we can watch a playthrough with some of the game mechanics built:
Try it for yourself! 🤩
