NBA 2k11 is widely regarded as one of, if not THE best NBA 2k games ever made. But that seems to beg the question why, and how, has it stood the test of time when others have just been kind of forgettable.

Once you completed the Jordan challenge it unlocked another mode called Creating A Legend. This was by far my favourite part of 2k11 because you played in the style of mycareer, but took a rookie MJ and put him into any team you wanted to try and create your own MJ Dynasty. You could choose a lower-table team like the Raptors and prove you could win the finals by yourself, something that LeBron has never done. Or you could finally see what it would look like to pair up MJ with Lebron, and watch how every team crumbles before you. All in all, this feature was simply amazing, purely because it gave everyone the feeling of what it was, to be like Mike.

I feel like I'm fucked. I'm in the offseason right now. In 2k11 they have a list of offseason tasks you have to complete before you move on to the real season. The last task is to schedule training camps (things like Big Man Offense or Offensive Fundamentals that give attribute boosts). So I complete the last task and hit "start" on the controller in order to complete the offseason. I get the message about "Advancing will result in completion of the offseason. Are you sure you wish to continue?" And I hit "yes." THEN (and this is where it starts to get bad) I get a message about how "You may only bring 15 players into the regular season. You will need to cut your roster down by either trading or waiving players." And I'm like "oh yeah I forgot that I drafted 5 guys this year, I must be over the limit." So I go to the manage roster thing and start looking to see who I should trade/waive. BUT I can't trade anyone. And I can't waive anyone. It doesn't give me the option to do either. I have the option to release someone or send them down to my D-League team, but when I try that, the guy doesn't leave my roster and I just get a message about how "You can only have a maximum of 15 players on this team." Like, yeah I know, that's why I'm trying to get these guys off the team... And I don't know what to do now. I can't advance to the season unless I remove players from my roster, but it wont let me remove anyone from my roster. I've messed with some setting and tried to approach this from every angle, but there's just no way to get guys off my team.

I've played the newer 2k games, on 360 and "next" gen. None of them had every felt as smooth as 2k11 to me. I know you get used to the new games eventually but 2k11's movement system is just more seamless than the more recent games I've played. If you're standing at the top of the key with a live dribble and you want to move 2 inches to the right, you can. You don't accidentally move 5 feet to the right because the physics engine only lets you do 5 pre-set animations. And of course there are occasionally "stuck in an animation" moments every once in a while, but they are truly few and far between. And there are even ways to counter some of the "sucked into an animation" moments in 2k11. Basically 2k11 feels like playing real free-movement basketball more than any game that I've tried after it. Also, with how much this sub complains about every 2k and all the gameplay issues, it's hard to feel optimistic about really diving into a more recent vintage.
