LYRICS
Hui e, tāiki e!
Tōia mai te waka nei
Kūmea mai te waka nei
Ki te takotoranga i takoto ai
Tiriti te mana motuhake
Te tangi a te manu e
Pīpīwharauroa
Kūī kūī kūī!
Whiti, whiti, ora
Hui e, tāiki e!
Haka:
Totoia kumekumea!
I te kokoma, i te kokomako
Ko te Hautapu e rite ki te kainga a Matariki (Pakia!)
Tapa reireia koia tapa
Tapa kononua koia na tupuna
Hi aue hi!
Ko te iwi Maori e ngunguru nei!
I au, au, aue ha hi!
Ko te iwi Maori e ngunguru nei!
I au, au, aue ha hi!
I ahaha!
Ka tu te ihi
Ihi ka tu te wanawana
I runga i te Rangi e
Tu iho nei, tu iho nei
Totoia, kumekumea!
Hi!
This waiata was composed by Piri Poutapu in the 1930's. Tōia Mai is the second verse of a greater song that Piri was inspired to write after being instructed by Te Puea Hērangi in 1936 to construct and carve seven waka taua that represented the people of the seven original waka that came to Aotearoa from Hawaiki during the Great Migration in the mid 1300's.
Piri Poutapu (Tainui, Ngāti Koroki) was born at Maungatautari in 1905 to Pouaka Winikerei and Rangitaau Paraki. He was whangaied to Te Puea Hērangi and aidied her in establishing Tūrangawaewae Marae at Ngāruawāhia in 1921. He was a very skilled carver as well as a good lyricist.
